Sweden’s National Day

Sweden’s National Day

Whenever there is a bank holiday, I always get the feeling of a bonus day, almost like it’s a day that doesn’t even exists in the calendar. I don’t need to get extra rest from work as on a normal weekend. I know there is “another” weekend coming up soon, so I can just pack some stuff, get out and completely enjoy the day.

Today is one of those days, it’s the national day here in Sweden and there will be no one expecting my attention for the whole day, so I decided to make some delicious sandwiches, bring out a thermos of hot coffee and put up my hammock so that I can listen to the birds singing and smell the incredible scent of the first warm summer morning and maybe just maybe, bring out my crosswords.

I don’t know how you feel, but for me it’s becoming more and more important to just get away from the noise in the city. My stress level is increasing with the noise around me, so to get away in the middle of the week, even if it’s just for some hours, is something I cherish.
To get out in the nature should be easy enough that you really don’t have to take more than 10 minutes to get out of your house. Instead of planning every step and minute of your outing by detail, I rather like to think, what is the reason for me to get out. Often the answer is just to get out and get closer to the nature and for that purpose, all I really need is clothes for the weather and some food to make the most out of it. From last night, I had some leftovers from dinner, a super tasty “skagenröra” which is a classic Swedish shrimp salad and a traditional tuna mayo. To not make it too complicated, I just put the two mixes in separate containers, packet some bred on the side and brought salad, herbs and tomatoes to go with it. Off course the coffee was brewing at the same time so I could just pour the black gold in the thermos flask before I left the apartment.

Pretty much what you need on a national day. A hammock, something to eat and something to drink. And off course a nice shady place!

So what do I want to say with this? Well, for the every day and easy access outdoor life, I would like to give some tips:
  1. Aim to not take more than 10 minutes to get out of your house if you only intend to stay out for some hours. It must be easy to get out, then it will happen!
  2. Focus on the purpose of getting out. Everything else is secondary. So what if you don’t have the tomatoes or you ran out of eggs for your omelette. Take something else. The best way is to bring the ingredients separate and just prepare your simple meal when your out. I promise, you will feel like a master chef!
  3. Don’t plan to much. The gift of the nature it that, what happens happens so try to just enjoy that!

Perfect sandwiches for lacy days. One with shrimp sallad and one with tuna sallad.
